INFOCOM 2000 Student Grants

This is to acknowledge the generous support of the NSF to Infocom 2000. With this support, 20 students were awarded $1150 to support their attendance in the conference. In addition, one junior faculty was awarded $1500 to support his attendance in the conference.

DEADLINE FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS IS OVER

U.S. students should apply for one grant only

Travel Grants for Students from U.S. Institutions (NSF Grants)
IEEE Travel Grants (Communications Society Grants)

Travel Grants for Students from U.S. Institutions (NSF Grants)

These grants are funded by the NSF, awarded by an Infocom Committee and administered by the IEEE. They are available to Ph.D. students, postdocs and junior faculty at U.S. post-secondary institutions to defray travel costs for attending the conference. The majority of the NSF-funded awards will be given to students. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted from all U.S.-based students, including those on student visas (J-1 or F-1).

The application process will be carried out electronically. Applications differ slightly for faculty and postdocs than for students.

The application for a student should contain:

An application for a postdoc or junior faculty travel award should include:

Applications should be submitted via email to Nina Taft-Plotkin (nina@sprintlabs.com).

The deadline for applying for the NSF grant is December 15th, 1999.

Applicants will be notified with a decision by February 5, 2000, and will have to make a decision whether or not to accept the grant by March 1, 2000.

IEEE Travel Grants (Communications Society Grants)

You may qualify for a student Travel Grant to defray some of your costs presenting a paper in this conference. The IEEE Communications Society will award a limited number of Student Travel Grants to full-time students who represent their accepted papers at Infocom 2000. Recipients of the grants must reside in a Major Region other than the one in which the conference is held (Infocom 2000 is held in Region 8 that includes Europe, Africa and the Middle East).

This grant consists of US$800. To receive the grant the recipient must be the author of an accepted paper in the conference, and actually attend the conference and present the paper. The candidate must be a student member of IEEE or must have applied for student membership, and must also be a full-time student regularly registered toward a degree in related fields in a university. The acceptance ratio varies depending on the number of applications for a particular conference.

Applications should be submitted by the students, or their advisors, to the Regional Representatives for the Major Region in which the applicants reside. The names, addresses and other information for the representatives are printed on the application forms.

Grants Within the Same Major Region:

Special exceptional cases with very restricted conditions are also allowed for students from Region 8 to receive grants to attend Infocom 2000. In this case, the grant is US$500. Examples of special conditions to be considered are:
(i) A very high paper review score, or recommendation by the Technical Program Committee Chair, or author of more than one paper.
(ii) Minimum air fare to attend the conference is very high (for example, the air fare Turkey to London, Australia to Tokyo, etc.), as verified by the Regional representative.
(iii) A letter signed by the advisor or another officer of the university indicating that there is no way for the student to obtain travel support locally.
(iv) The cost of this part of the grant program is not to exceed 15% of the total student travel grant budget allocated to each specific conference.

The above instructions are also available in grant-description.pdf (PDF file).

Use the form in grant-form.doc (Word file) or grant-form.pdf (PDF file) to apply. The form should be sent to the appropriate IEEE regional representative, as listed in the form.

The deadline for applying for the IEEE Communications Society Grant is December 15, 1999. Applicants will be notified with a decision by February 5, 2000, and will have to make a decision whether or not to accept the grant by March 1, 2000.
